Chew away — gum can be good for teeth
Source: http://www.msnbc.msn.com
Updated: 10:48 a.m. ET Sept. 25, 2007
CHICAGO -The nation’s largest dentist group now says gum can be good for you, as long as it’s sugar-free.
The American Dental Association said Tuesday it has awarded its seal of acceptance to Wrigley sugar-free gums Orbit, Extra and Eclipse — based on studies funded at least partially by the maker of Wrigley gums, Chicago-based Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co.
It’s the first time the ADA has allowed its seal to appear on gum after clearing it for thousands of other products since 1930.
The ADA said its independent review of the studies confirms those three gums have been shown to help prevent cavities, reduce plaque acid and strengthen teeth.
It said studies submitted by Wrigley showed that chewing those gum products for 20 minutes three times a day after meals increases saliva production. Saliva, the ADA said, helps neutralize and wash away plaque acid and bathes the teeth in minerals such as calcium, phosphate and fluoride, which are known to strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent cavities.
Clifford Whall, director of the ADA seal of acceptance program, said its council on scientific affairs found the studies, which focused solely on Wrigley products, had followed scientific principles.
“The council has looked at the body of data and concluded that there are some health benefits to chewing these products three times a day for 20 minutes,” he said.
Favoring large companies?
Wrigley paid $36,000 to submit its evaluation material — $12,000 per product. ADA also said Wrigley spends $35,000 to $45,000 in exhibit booth space at its annual meeting, advertising in its publications and on other sponsorships. It also pays $25,000 to help sponsor an ADA health screening program.
Consumer advocate Peter Lurie said the dental association should test other products before issuing such a seal, with the system appearing to be biased in favor of large companies that can afford the clinical studies.
“As long as the testing process and the criteria for receipt of a seal is unclear, the exact meaning of the ADA’s seal will remain obscure,” said Lurie, deputy director of the Health Research Group at Public Citizen, the nonprofit consumer advocacy group founded by Ralph Nader.
Whall said the program exists solely to inform consumers and dentists about whether products do what their manufacturers say they do. The seal currently appears on various toothpaste, dental floss and oral rinse products.

Your friends may be your diet's worst enemies

Hmmm, I agree with this one because I always pigged out everytime I'm eating with my friends.Grrrrrrr and I just can't help it.
A recent study showed that overweight people are more likely to have overweight friends and that when we eat with friends, we eat about 35 percent more than we would if we dined alone. Hmmmm quite true and I think I'm eating 100% more when I'm with my friends, ahehheeh.

Tangerine peel could help fight cancer

Researchers said on Wednesday (September 12) that tangerine peel might br of help in the fight against certain cancers. The scientists at Leicester School of Pharmacy found human cancer cells, which contain an enzyme called P450 CYP1B1, were destroyed by a compound contained in tangerine peel, Salvestrol Q40.The findings may offer a new approach to uncovering a treatment for cancers such as breast, lung, prostate and ovarian cancer, the scientists said.
Medicinal chemist Dr. Hoon L. Tan said: "It is very exciting to find a compound in food that can target cancers specifically."Salvestrols may offer a new mechanism of dietary anti-cancer action.
"Indeed, the depletion of salvestrols in the modern diet is due to the fact that many people no longer eat the skin of fruits and this may be a major contributory factor to the increasing incidence of some cancers in the human population."

Chunky Peach Strawberry Sauce

Here's a healthy, yet delicious recipe from hungry-girl.com :
Chunky Peach Strawberry Sauce
PER SERVING (1/4th of recipe): 61 calories, <0.5g fat, 40mg sodium, 15g carbs, 2g fiber, 8g sugars, 1g protein = 1 Point
This stuff tastes AMAZING all by itself, but it's also insanely good over light ice cream, on top of oatmeal, mixed into fat-free yogurt or cottage cheese... and more!
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups frozen whole strawberries
1 1/2 cups frozen peach slices
2 tbsp. Splenda No Calorie Sweetener, granulated
2 tbsp. cornstarch
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
dash salt
Directions:
Combine Splenda, cornstarch, cinnamon, vanilla extract and salt with 1/2 cup of cold water. Stir until all ingredients are completely dissolved. Set aside.
Place fruit in a nonstick pot over medium-low heat. Once fruit begins to thaw, add liquid mixture. Stir.
As fruit defrosts and heats, use a spatula to break fruit apart into smaller pieces. Continuously stir until mixture becomes uniform, thick and syrupy.
Can be eaten hot, warm or chilled in the fridge until cold (but it's best eaten the day it's prepared). Enjoy!
MAKES 4 SERVINGS

Overcome your sleeplessness
Are you experiencing sleepless nights and don't know what to do? Here are some tips on how to overcome sleeplessness from www.healthtips.in :
1. Have a light snack before going to bed. Do not take spicy food or excessive sweets. Help your digestive system by taking light snacks like a few slices of bread or some cereal. This will reduce the pressure on your digestive system which will allow you to sleep peacefully and will not disturb you trying to digest food.
2. Avoid nicotine... or atleast ensure that you do not consume any kind of nicotine atleast 5-6 hours before you go to bed.
3. Many people have the habit of taking alcohol and assume that this gives better sleep. This is not true and also this could lead to complications. Usually, you will have disturbed sleep after consuming Alcohol. Avoid Alcohol atleast for 5-6 hours befor you go to sleep.
4. Try taking milk before going to bed. You can also take some malt beverages which normally helps in having good sleep. Always ensure that you dont go to bed hungry.
5. Try to keep your bedroom clean and well ventilated. If you are getting disturbed by any noise around, try to use earplugs to have a peacefull sleep.
6. Be active during the day. Dont doze off during the day, as this may be an obstacle to your night sleep.
7. Finally, sleep comfortably. Make a good and comfortable bed, stretch your legs and sleep comfortably. Dozing off on the Sofa, chair in uncomfortable positions is not a healthy habit.
