in choosing shampoos
Here's a guide on how to choose the right shampoo for you:
Most shampoos are detergent based(lauryl sulphates). To this are added several chemicals-stabilisers, preservatives, conditioning agents, perfumes and colours.
A shampoo should be judged by its performance-not by its appearance, colour, perfume and definitely not by its price. It should clean hair and rinse out easily, leaving the hair smooth and manageable.Lots of lather is not a measure of its efficiency-though it may indicate a high detergent content.Neither does a thick consistency mean that the shampoo is more concentrated.
There is a good range of products-labelled as "for oily hair", "for dry hair", and "for normal hair".The differences in these shampoos is in the type of detergent used and also in the concentration of the detergent (being greatest for greasy hair) used.
Regarding the pH of shampoos, it is generally agreed that neutral or slightly acidic shampoos are better for the hair, especially the hair that has been physically or chemically damaged.

combing or brushing?
Here's an explanation about combing and brushing fro 101 lifestyle.com and it's up to you to decide which one will be better for you:
If you use a soft brush, brushing is less damaging than combing, but a stiff brush does cause more damage to the hair than a comb.Prolonged brushing also harms hair considerably.Back combing also damages the hair.It ruffles the scales of the cuticle as well as it causes knotting which is difficult to untangle.
Wet hair should never be combed or brushed as this causes greater damage to the hair.A good comb should have rounded and not sharp teeth.Nylon brushes with spiky ends also damage the hair.

a more serene life

Here are steps to a more serene life from 101lifestyle.com and let's see if it will be effective on you:
1. Stay Mindful
Mindfulness relieves stress by increasing your awareness of your body. What you can do:
Practice in a warm room where you won't be interrupted.Wear loose clothing.
* Lie down, and try not to fall asleep.
* Start by observing your breathing.
*Concentrate on the big toe on your left foot, noticing any sensations in your toe.Dont put a good or bad label on these sensations;just observe them.
*Imagine your breath coming in and out of your toe.
*After a few minutes, when you're ready to leave your big toe, allow it to fade from your mind.Take a few deep breaths, then move onto the rest of your toes on the left foot, focusing on them as a group.Repeat the process of observing sensations in your toes, without judging the feelings.Imagine breath coming in and out of your toes, then allow the to dissolve in your mind's eye.Focus on the sole of your foot, your heel, the top of your foot, and your ankle.Move slowly up your left leg, through your body,to the top of your head.
*The scan should take about 20-40 minutes;practice it once a day.
2. Keep Negative Thinking At Bay
Negative thoughts triggers the stress response, causing the body to release adrenaline, cortisol, and steroids.Over time, these hormones can affect multiple systems and organs in your body.To prevent negative thought you can:
*Stop and listen to what you're saying, particularly when your stressed.
*Breathe. After youve tuned in,take a deep breath to relax.
*Be objective.Do not assume the negative,be an optimist.
3. Stay Connected
When you "create community",you develope a network of friends and acquaintances.Such sound relationships can ease the stress of a serious illness. What you can do:
*Heal existing relationships.
*Widen your circle of friends.
*Connect yourself.
4. Work Up A Sweat
Whether its a brisk walk,an afternoon spent gardening, regular exercise can reduce anxiety, boost your mood, and generally improve and maintain your health.Exercise builds self-esteem and releases endorphins, brain chemicals that trigger positive feelings. What you can do:
*To start with ,opt for a low-stress regimen.Find an activity you enjoy(swimming, dancing, walking, cycling)and stick with it.
*Dont go overboard.Exercise too much without proper rest and recovery periods, and you'll risk injuries that can increase your stress.
5. Go Down On Your Knees
Prayer is the act of communicating with the divine. It has been proved that the repetition of prayers can produce "the relaxation response", lowering the blood pressure and heart rate, and increasing feelings of serenity. This act of relying on a force more powerful than yourself gives you a sense of confidence that you dont have to handle your problems alone. What you can do:
*Keep the language simple.
*Start small eg. a simple "Thank You" first thing in the morning.
*Dont focus on relief.
6. Turn To Yoga
Yoga can reduce the impact of stress by increasing muscle flexibility. When we are stressed, our muscles respond by tightening, and yoga postures can counteract that tightenings. What you can do:Try these tree poses.Wear loose, comfortable clothing, remove shoes, and practice the poses on a mat on the floor.
7. Bridge pose
Lie on your back with your feet flat on the floor and your knees bent and pointing to the ceiling.Place your feet hip-width apart and your arms, palms down, next to your body.Lift your abdomen toward the ceiling.Your weight will shift to rest on your upper back and the back of your neck and head.Watch your breath moving in and out of your abdomen.Hold this position for 1 minute(for as long as you can).Slowly lower your back towards the floor, rolling it down one vetebra at a time.
8. The Cat
Get down on the floor on your hands and knees, with your arms and thighs perpendicular to the floor.Exhale, retract your abdominal muscles, and arch your back like a cat, allowing your head to drop forward, your chin toward your chest.Inhale and release your back so it sags downward.Raise your head so you're looking straight ahead.Move between the arching and sagging motions slowly, but without pausing in either position.Repeat this sequence 10 times.
9. Child's Pose
Kneel on the floor, then sit your buttocks on your heels.Lower your torso onto your lap, resting your forehead on the floor.Rest your arms next to your body, palms up.Allow your body to settle into this position.Hold for a few seconds or until you feel relaxed.Breathe normally.

Cure burns with honey
Honey's potent anti-inflammatory action makes it the perfect choice for treating burns. Most of the damage from a burn comes from the swelling, not the heat itself. So,controlling that inflammation is key to healing.Clinical trials have shown that honey is superior to conventional medical treatments even for serious burns. But for safe self-treatment,save it for only minor heat-related mishaps.Keep the affected area under cold water for a minute(so skin does not continue to cook),smooth it with honey and cover the area with an adhesive bandage.

The power of honey

Honey is a sweet thick fluid prepared by the honeybees from the nectar of flowers.Nutritionally speaking, honey contains about 75-80% sugar and the rest is a mixture of water and minerals like phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, some acids and enzymes. So we see, that together with minerals, honey also gives us energy, about 300 to 320 calories per 100ml of honey. To put it simply, one tsp of honey would give us about 15 to 16 calories.
The enzymes present in honey aid in digestion of food especially raw sugars and starch. The difference between the commonly used sugar and honey is that, the sugars contained in honey are in a very simple predigested form and thus are directly absorbed by our body.Whereas the normal sugar has to be broken down in our body into simpler forms to be digested and absorbed.Apart from giving nutrition, honey can be used as a sweetening agent in sweets and desserts.
In addition to the excellent medicinal properties, honey is supposed to be a good thirst quencher.Arabs take honey and water across deserts.Another aspect of honey is its use in the beauty treatment. One of the most commonly used facepacks for aging skin,is a mixture of honey and cornflour and limejuice. It also acts as a good moisturiser and helps in most dry skin problems.
So we see that honey is a pleasant, attractive, sweet item of food with plenty of other uses too. This does not mean that you can eat as much honey,as you like.We all know that excess of calories over and above what we require would make us fat and honey does have calories.Honey may improve your digestion but it should not be done at the cost of giving you a sweet tooth!
As Medicine:
1. One to two tsps full of honey in a glass of hot milk is said to be a good sedative.
2. For children the use of honey as a general tonic has been known from time immemorial. The reason being that honey acts as a disinfectant and an antiseptic. So a judicious internal administration of honey would render the digestive system aseptic and disease-causing germs would fail to thrive.
3. Honey is good for sore throats, coughs and colds. An age-old cough mixture still used in many homes consists of honey and limejuice in equal parts.
4. Honey is also reputed to be a good stimulant for a weak heart.
5.As far as constipation is concerned, honey is a very popular laxative.

The ABC of good health
I've been surfing the net about health and I found this article entitled ABC of good health from 101.lifestyle.com :
Have some regular, strenuous exercise at least 1/2 hour each day.Running cycling, swimming, brisk walking will help reduce your fat by ruining excess calories.Overweight is the cause of many diseases and if you are overweight you should reduce your calorie intake. If you should spend more calories in work than what you take from food you will loose weight and vice versa. It is all a question of calorie balance. The number of calories spent by some of the most common exercises are:
Model Man of 70 kg wt.
------------------------
Exercise Calories Spent
Walking at 5km/hr 5 calories/minute
Cycling 8 calories/minute
Running 20 calories/minute
Swimming 11 calories/minute
Reclining 1.3 calories/minute
Obesity, smoking, diabetes and high blood pressure are few risk factors that could lead to heart attack.A good control over these factors is essential.High blood pressure to start with will not produce any symptoms and unless you get your Blood Pressure checked periodically you may never know that you have high blood pressure.
Try to abstain from heavy smoking and regular intake of Alcohol, as both have negative effects on the body.Heavy smoking not only increases the risk of heart attacks but also reduces the capacity of the lungs and can cause cancer in the lungs.Alcoholism on the other hand results in poor eating habits, can cause protein and vitamin deficiencies.Heavy drinking can cause severe liver damage and vomiting of blood and can cause brain damage in extreme cases.

My health blog
Hi everyone and welcome to my health blog!
I decided to create a blog just to focus on health, healthy food and fitness to inspire me to shed some pounds through proper eating and exercise.
To be slim was always one of my goals since my high school days, but until now I failed and it's because I lack self-discipline and self-determination.I want to exercise daily, but I'm overcomed by my laziness. I want to eat healthy foods and eat less, but my voraciousity had won the battle. My mind is very eager to make the change, but my body is not cooperating.
I hope this blog would help me in one way or another in achieving my goal of loosing some kilos and the goal of staying fit and living a healthy life.
